Healthy Dieting – What You Don’t Know Could Hurt You

Dieting will not get you anywhere if you just listen and do any advices that pop around you. Many dieter wannabe have failed miserably because they decide to take advices from people they trust most such as family member, neighbors, friends, or coworkers.

If you talk to your banker or accountant you will probably get answers, but the problem is they are likely to be the wrong answers. Even if some weird diet ‘plan’ worked for someone it doesn’t mean it will work for you; it doesn’t mean it’s good for you and it doesn’t mean it will allow you to keep the weight off permanently. A healthy weight loss plan will allow you to maintain a healthy weight for the rest of your life. The next time you want diet advice, ask a professional.

These few facts are only small part of healthy dieting aspects, but it will help you to become a more knowledgeable dieter:

1. Diets have two main purposes: lose weight, and keep it off. Some weight loss plans focus on gaining muscle, but that’s not the type of diet we’re interested in. The two main steps you need to follow to lose weight are eating the right foods in the right portions and adding exercise to your routine.

2. There are many extremely low calorie (800-1000 calories a day) diet plans around today such as low carb diet, low fat diet, low calorie diet, etc. If the plan you are considering encourages you to cut your daily caloric intake to such extremely low levels you should consult your doctor before you start.

3. Lose weight is not that difficult; all you have to do is follow your diet program with discipline. It will take time, but it will show result. Weight management or maintain ideal weight, however, has proven to be more difficult. From people that manage to lose significant weight, only 20% are able to maintain it for a full year.

4. When you cut your food intake to lose weight for long period, your body will think that you are in short supply of foods and react to preserve itself by entering ’starvation mode’; a condition where it store fat to survive without food for long time. Current diet programs have many techniques specifically devised to counter this body mechanism, just take your pick.

5. If you are under 18 and/or suffer from chronic illnesses you should consult your doctor before starting any diet plan, particularly one that encourages eating very few calories. Any good diet plan should include the proper amount of food in a good nutritional balance such as: fats, proteins, carbs, vitamins, and minerals along with enough water.

6. Some extreme diet plans such as the grapefruit diet, or cabbage soup diet, rely solely on what you eat to lose weight. Ideally you should include some form of regular exercise in your diet plan. Not only will exercise keep you healthier than just dieting alone, it will make the dieting process quicker and easier if you keep moving. Just a simple walk everyday can do wonders.

7. Losing weight can come from three major sources: fat loss, water loss, or muscle loss. You want to focus your dieting efforts on losing fat. If you exercise regularly during your diet not only can you maintain your muscle, which you should do since the more muscle you have the higher your metabolism will burn, but you will also look thinner if you’re well toned.

8. There are dieting drugs available that will help you suppress your appetite. The problem with these drugs is that they are a quick fix. If you don’t permanently change your lifestyle by making better food choices and adding exercise, you won’t maintain your weight loss. If you are determined to try some sort of diet pills make sure to carefully read and follow label directions.

9. A study shows that dieters who keep food diary lose more weight than those who do not. Apparently write down everything that you eat will encourage the dieters to eat less.

10. Fasting is one of the commonly used weight loss techniques; be very careful when starting this kind of diet since it can lead to malnutrition if used carelessly. The best way to use this technique is consult it with a doctor beforehand.
